About

CULTUREWEEK was started by Alex Maverick, our publisher, a little over four years ago. (It was our fourth birthday in March 2008!) Our goal as a publication was and is to seek out the embodiment of culture in our community and to share it with our Bloomington readers. We have found in our search that culture can manifest itself in many forms, and though we began by exploring music, fine arts and theatre, we have expanded to include a column on film and a “green” and “food” section. We are always open to exploration of new cultural bounds, such as religion and philosophy, literature, fashion, sports, and other parts of your life. The idea of “culture” is complex and nuanced, but one could say it is made up of the concepts, traditions, and knowledge that we find most important and worthy of passing from generation to generation. Cultureweek strives and will always strive to provide content that deeply explores the culture in our community, and is interesting, useful, and compelling to our readers.

If our mission resonates with you, maybe you’ll consider joining us on the Cultureweek staff or advertising with us for your Bloomington business.

Do you have something that you’d like covered in Cultureweek? Email and let us know! We like covering local events that may not otherwise be covered in some of the larger publications in Bloomington. Since we’re monthly, try to let us know at least a month ahead of time so it has a better chance of being covered.

The calendar already has a few items, and soon will be updated with all of the cultural events listed in our print version, plus more. If you’d like to have an event listed on the calendar, email editor(at)cultureweek(.)com with “calendar listings” in the subject. The following is a list of our staff and contributing writers. If you would like to join our staff, please email editor(at)cultureweek(.)com. We are always looking for eager writers with expertise in the fields of fine arts, local music, classical music, theatre, and more!

Weekly? We must admit, the name of our publication is a bit misleading to our readers. Cultureweek was created with plans to become a weekly magazine, and those plans still exist. However, we have found that for sustainable growth, the best method is “slow and steady,” and we have continually worked on increasing our breadth before our frequency. So, we apologize for any confusion, but “Culturemonth” just didn’t have that ring to it.
